Royal Comets Sports

One of my most memorable moments as a Wrestling Coach at Rush-Henrietta was the night the Royal Comets won thier first league title in 1998. Our team was undefeated going into the league title match and we needed to defeat our league rival at the time Webster. The Webster Warriors had a excellent team that season and many wrestling fans from around Monroe County came to see the matchup between the Royal Comets vs. the Warriors. A large crowd was anticipated, but never would I anticipate the Rush Henrietta Senior High Gymnasium to be a soldout crowd. The Comet wrestlers as a team needed to compete that night like they never had before. It was amazing to see how competitve and tough our boys were that night. The Royal Comets not only won their first Monroe County League Title that night, but they helped raise the bar for future wrestlers to come through our program. That night proved what can happen when a team has Discipline, Desire, and Dedication to accomplish a goal.

My proudest moment as an RH Wrestler actually came in a defeat. It was my senior yearas a captain we were pretty bitter heading into a hostile crowd at Brockport. And We were big underdogs. But right away we set the tempo. Kevin Lagerus got a big win then Omadu shocked the crowd when he beat the County Champ Justin James. We lost I believe at 145 and 152. I got a Big OT win after that then just watching us battle the whole night made me proud to be part of the RH community. Tom Moore was supposed to get hammered by Vitaliy Basisty who had like 10 pounds on him but he fought! and there were so much alumni supporting us thats why r program is unique are alum never forget were they came from! we lost that match but we came after them and made it scary!

I still remember when Mickey took over a STRUGGLING Rush-Henrietta Wrestling Team. In 2 short years Mickey had us ranked as one of the top teams in Monroe County and section five. We had numerous contributors that year, Captains Chris Hillen, Pat Spencer and Myself, along with guys like Nate Work, Steve Mearriam, Matt Genevechio, Justin Vandermied and many other younger guys coming up. I will never forget our last home match against ER in which EVERY senior won and clinched us 2nd place in the county.
What anight it was...I still have the video of that match!

I tell you this I do not miss cutting all that weight but I do miss being in that room with all of the guys and just being yourself with no worries. Wrestling is something I and I do not think anyone willever forget. I do not know how you could forget Mickey either.
